World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will be tested after being grouped with reigning U.S. Open champion J.J. Spaun and U.S. Amateur champion Mason Howell. Scheffler will be attempting to become the seventh golfer ever to complete the career grand slam with a victory at Shinnecock Hills, and his 30th birthday happens to fall on Sunday during the final round of the major tournament.
Scheffler recently told Paul Hodowanic of PGATour.com that he isn't putting pressure on himself to complete the career grand slam, as his focus has always been on winning every tournament, whether it's a major or not.
"I never stood there in the mirror and said, I have to do this, but this was always something that I dreamed about doing," Scheffler said. "… I get to live my dream out here playing tournaments and competing and the actual competition is one of my favorite things in the whole world. That's what I said, if I could, I would play every single week out here."
Rory McIlroy, who was the most recent golfer to complete the career grand slam, certainly will be hoping to give Scheffler a run for his money. The five-time major champion has finished outside of the top five in each of his last three appearances since winning the 2026 Masters Tournament, so he will try to bring his best as he looks to add another major title to his mantle.
