John Tortorella's Future as Golden Knights HC Determined After 2026 NHL Stanley Cup Final Loss

Scott PolacekJun 16, 2026

John Tortorella led the Vegas Golden Knights to the Stanley Cup Final, but he is not coming back for another season.

The team announced on Tuesday that he will not return after taking over late in the season ahead of the playoffs.

"We thank Torts for the guidance he provided our team since joining the organization in March," Vegas general manager Kelly McCrimmon said in a statement. "When the decision was made to bring Torts to Vegas, we needed an immediate impact to help us at a pivotal point in the season. Torts' experience and leadership proved to be the boost that we were looking for, helping guide us to the Stanley Cup Final. We are grateful for Torts' passion, sincerity, and commitment to our organization, and we wish him and his family the best."

The Golden Knights made the shocking decision to fire head coach Bruce Cassidy and replace him with Tortorella with eight games remaining in the 2025-26 campaign when things seemed to be slipping away.

It turned out to be a brilliant move, as they won seven of those eight games with the only defeat coming in overtime. They then rode that momentum into the postseason and reached the Stanley Cup Final before losing to the Carolina Hurricanes in six games.

Tortorella was asked after that loss if he planned on returning and said, "I've got to swallow this a little bit" before adding some more context, per Mark Anderson of the Associated Press.

"I feel very fortunate to get to know the team, get to know the organization," the coach said. "It's a first-class organization. Just to have the opportunity. I wanted to coach. I want to coach. To jump in with this gang, I feel so fortunate."

He also said, "I'm anxious to see what happens next year because it has another chance."

The comments stood in contrast to those he made during a previous interview with Sportsnet (h/t ESPN's Kristen Shilton) when he said, "end of June, I'm done, as far as with Vegas" in what seemed like a reference to his arrangement with general manager Kelly McCrimmon when he was hired as a short-term replacement.

Alas, that turned out to be the case even though he fell just two wins shy of a Stanley Cup title.

Ultimately, the Golden Knights couldn't overcome their goaltending issues against the Hurricanes. Carter Hart became the first goalie in league history to give up four or more goals in each of the first four games of a Stanley Cup Final and struggled for the majority of the matchup.

Still, it was quite a run for Vegas.

It defeated the Utah Mammoth in the first round with a dramatic overtime win in Game 4 and a double-overtime win in Game 5 after falling behind 2-1. It used more overtime magic in the second-round win over the Anaheim Ducks by breaking a 2-2 series tie with a Game 5 win in extra time that cleared the way for a six-game victory.

Then came the most impressive accomplishment of Tortorella's brief tenure, as the Golden Knights swept away the Presidents' Trophy-winning Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference Final.

Colorado went 8-1 in the first two rounds and seemed destined to lift the Stanley Cup, but Tortorella's team stood in the way during an incredible performance that still didn't result in him returning.

It was a stunning turnaround for the Golden Knights, but Tortorella has enjoyed plenty of success during a career that also includes head-coaching stops with the New York Rangers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Vancouver Canucks, Columbus Blue Jackets and Philadelphia Flyers. He won a Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay and has a .540 points percentage overall.

While it wasn't completely smooth sailing with Vegas, which lost a 2026 second-round draft pick because of violations of the NHL's media policy, Tortorella still impressed even though he won't build on that momentum with a full season in 2026-27.
