Friday Highlights

West Virginia 7, Troy 5

The first game of the College World Series was a good one as West Virginia hung on in a tight battle.

The Mountaineers set the tone early, as Armani Guzman stole home in the bottom of the first for the first run of the game.

Troy answered as Jabe Boroff hit an RBI single, but West Virginia tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the second.

The Trojans posted a three-spot in the third inning to take a 4-3 lead, but the Mountaineers once again answered to tie things up, this time on a homer from Sean Smith.

West Virginia took a 5-4 lead in the fourth after an RBI double from Guzman before both offenses went quiet for a bit.

Troy found life again in the seventh when Jimmy Janicki hit a solo homer to even the game at five runs apiece.

West Virginia broke the tie in the eighth, scoring a pair of runs to get some insurance heading into the final frame.

Troy got a runner on with two outs, but ultimately couldn't rally as it dropped its first game of the College World Series.

With the win, West Virginia will now take on the winner of North Carolina on Sunday.

North Carolina 6, Ole Miss 2

After surging through regionals and super regionals, Ole Miss has suffered its first loss since the SEC tournament.

Both offenses got off to a slow start, with just two total runs scored through the first six innings. Ole Miss then broke the tie as Judd Utermark delivered an RBI single.

But the Rebels' lead didn't last long. In the bottom of the seventh, North Carolina used a sac fly and an RBI single to take a 3-2 lead. It then held Ole Miss scoreless in the eighth before breaking the game open in the bottom of the eighth.

Colin Hynek hit a three-run bomb to make it a 6-2 game, a lead that would hold as the Rebels failed to rally.

North Carolina will now face West Virginia on Sunday.
