New NFL Rumors on Patrick Mahomes Injury Rehab, Latest Timeline for Chiefs Star's Return
The Kansas City Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes are still gunning for a Week 1 return to the field as he recovers from a torn ACL, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported Thursday.
"Running and cutting" will be a focal point for Mahomes over the next few weeks and months, Fowler added, who also noted that the veteran quarterback "would like to get a dress rehearsal run in preseason action if he can."
"They are not at all shying away from [a potential Week 1 return]," Fowler concluded. "I don't think it's lip service. He still has to progress like Coach [Andy] Reid said, but he's giving himself a chance to be there and take that very first snap."
Mahomes, 30, tore his left ACL and LCL in mid-December. A typical ACL recovery is somewhere in the vicinity of nine months, which would be mid-September. Mahomes is clearly hoping to bump up that timeline a bit as the Chiefs look to bounce back from a disappointing 6-11 season, the first time the team has missed the playoffs since 2014 (and the first time in the Mahomes era).
