Red Sox CEO Calls Out 'Embarrassing' Season, Discusses Craig Breslow's Job Security

Paul KasabianJun 11, 2026

Boston Red Sox President and CEO Sam Kennedy said a change in team Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow's job status is "not even on the table" as the 27-39 team sits last in the American League East and 13.5 games behind the first-place Tampa Bay Rays (26-second mark).

Kennedy made the remarks on WEEI Radio's Greg Hill Show (26-second mark).

"I think it's important here at the outset to acknowledge how embarrassing, unacceptable, maddening, frustrating— whatever words you want to use—the past two and a half months have been. There's no way to sugarcoat it. It's been awful, especially when you consider the stated goal of building upon what happened last season.

The 2025 season ended with the Red Sox improving from 81 wins the year before to 89 victories and reaching the American League Wild Card round.

This season has been a nightmare. Boston's .688 OPS is the fifth-worst in the major leagues. Their 52 home runs is the lowest in MLB.

Injuries have significantly altered this team's trajectory. Staff ace Garrett Crochet suffered left shoulder inflammation/left lat tightness and is on the 60-day injured list. Outfielder Roman Anthony has played just 30 games and currently sits on the 10-day IL (right wrist sprain). Shortstop Trevor Story is on the 60-day IL with a sports hernia.

However, the team has also underperformed. Of note, only three regulars in the lineup have an OPS+ of over 100. Marcelo Mayer (.600 OPS), Masataka Yoshida (.652 OPS) and Jarren Durran (.652 OPS) are among those having off-years.

Boston's pitching is still above average (104 ERA+) despite Crochet being held to just six starts. However, the hitting has truly torpedoed the season.

Breslow made sweeping changes on April 25, firing manager Alex Cora, among others, after a 10-17 start. The Red Sox have still struggled, going 17-22 ever since.

Amid a four-game losing streak, there doesn't seem to be much light at the end of the tunnel this season unless the team gets much healthier in the second half and certain position players vastly improve.

Until then, the Red Sox hope to break their skid soon enough. They begin a six-game homestand Friday against the Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays.
