Christian Gonzalez Talks Patriots Contract Negotiations, CB Wants to Be 'Rewarded'

Scott PolacekJun 9, 2026

New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez has been with the AFC East team his entire career, and he doesn't want that to change in the future.

"Of course, I want to be here. I've said this multiple times," he told reporters Tuesday. "I've been drafted here. I want to be rewarded as a Patriot. I love this town. I love this city. So of course I want to be here."

The comments are notable since the 2026 campaign is the final year before an $18.1 million club option for 2027 on his contract.

He is eligible for an extension, though, and Nick Shook of NFL.com noted the defensive back remained away from the team during voluntary offseason activities as the two sides negotiated a potential new deal.

"There's little reason to worry about his general status for 2026, but it could include a hold-in to start training camp if negotiations don't progress to a satisfactory place," Shook wrote.

While the negotiations will continue to play out, New England surely wants Gonzalez to remain with its secondary for the foreseeable future.

After all, the 2023 first-round draft pick is just 23 years old and has already established himself as one of the best cornerbacks in the league. He was an All-Pro Second-Team selection during his second season in the NFL in 2024 and followed that up with a Pro Bowl effort in 2025.

Gonzalez helped lead the Patriots to last season's Super Bowl with an excellent playoff performance that included 19 tackles, seven passes defended, one interception, one sack and one forced fumble in four postseason games.

It showed he can perform under the game's brightest spotlight even when defending the opponent's best wide receiver, and he even helped limit Offensive Player of the Year Jaxon Smith-Njigba to just four catches for 27 yards in the Super Bowl.

If New England is going to return to that stage and take the next step by actually winning the Lombardi Trophy in the coming years, Gonzalez figures to be a major part of those efforts.

First, though, he and the team will look to come to terms on a new deal.
