Sophie Cunningham Jokes Caitlin Clark, Fever 'Didn't Follow the Plan' for Win in IG Meme

The Indiana Fever may have gone rogue for Caitlin Clark's game-winning three-pointer in the final seconds of Monday's 78-76 victory over the Washington Mystics.

Sophie Cunningham, who threw the inbounds pass to Clark on the three-pointer, posted a meme on Instagram that said "Didn't follow the plan … won anyway."

Notably, Clark responded and said, "Love you Soph."

Cunningham was surely having fun on social media, but a post suggesting she and Clark didn't follow the plan on the play is all the more notable given the discourse that has surrounded the Fever this season on the way to an inconsistent 6-5 start.

Some of that discourse stemmed from a previous heated exchange between Clark and head coach Stephanie White that saw the star guard throw her hands up and appear visibly frustrated at something that was said:

Clark and White both dismissed the idea there was any lingering tension between the two of them during ensuing conversations with the media, but it was still a head-turning development for a team that hasn't exactly lived up to expectations in the early going this season.

Clark herself has also struggled at times and is shooting just 38.3 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from three-point range to go with 4.3 turnovers per game.

The two-time All-Star has also received criticism for some of her on-court behavior and addressed those critiques ahead of Monday's game when she said, in part, "I don't think I would be as good of a player if I was very stoic and straightfaced all the time.

"… The fire and the passion, that's what makes me me. And you never want to lose that. Honestly, I feel like I could probably play with a little more of that lately."

With her team fully under the spotlight and questions about her own individual play, Clark responded with a potentially improvised game-winning shot to cap off a 19-point and five-assist performance against the Mystics.

Now she and the Fever will look to build some momentum when they face the Chicago Sky on Thursday.
