Panthers' Dave Canales Had Basal Cell Carcinoma Removed from Nose After Skin Cancer Screening
Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales revealed that he underwent surgery to remove a small spot of basal cell carcinoma after a routine skin cancer screening showed areas of concern on his nose.
"It's a good reminder not to take these things for granted," Canales told reporters Tuesday, via Steve Reed of the Associated Press. "It was a basal cell type of skin cancer in a small spot, and they were able to get it off. So I'm really appreciative."
Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer and is highly curable, per Reed.
Canales is entering his third season as head coach of the Panthers.
He was initially hired by Carolina in Jan. 2024 after he spent the 2023 season serving as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offensive coordinator.
While the Panthers finished with a mere 5-12 record during Canales' first season in 2024, they're coming off an 8-9 finish to go along with an NFC South title last year. They narrowly fell to the Los Angeles Rams in the Wild Card round of the playoffs by the final score of 34-31.
