New Red Sox Rumors on Craig Breslow's Job Status While Last-Place in AL East Standings

Andrew PetersJun 8, 2026

Amid a disastrous season for the Boston Red Sox, speculation has risen regarding chief baseball officer Craig Breslow's job status.

But it appears the team isn't planning on making a change. Per Tim Healey of the Boston Globe, the team is not considering parting ways with Breslow. Additionally, Healey reported that "the club's ownership hierarchy has not even discussed making a change."

The Red Sox made major changes not even a month into the season, firing manager Alex Cora and six other coaches amid a 10-17 start to the year. Things haven't improved much for Boston since firing Cora, as it's currently sitting in last place in the AL East at 27-36.

Breslow is still relatively new to the organization, assuming his role in the front office in 2023. He also inherited Cora and his coaching staff, so the Red Sox's ownership group might want to give him the chance to work with a new staff before moving on from him.

The Athletic reported after Cora's firing that "the disconnect between Breslow and certain members of the coaching staff was well known last season."

While the rough start to the year would perhaps indicate that the Red Sox are shifting their focus towards next season, that doesn't seem to be the case. Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic noted last month that Boston has been making calls and "canvassing the league" in hopes of bolstering the lineup.

Breslow also indicated last week that he believes his team is capable of making a postseason run.

"Having a lot of conversations, a lot of discussions, and I think it's been kind of true industry-wide," Breslow said, per Healey. "There are a lot of teams that probably feel pretty similarly to us, which is to say that they have confidence in their rosters, they know they're not playing as well as they're capable of, and really nobody has kind of put the postseason out of reach. So there are a bunch of teams that are in it right now and are thinking along the same lines as we are."

Breslow seems to be in no danger of losing his job anytime soon, and turning things around to reach the postseason would only help his chances of sticking around.
