Alex Bregman Takes Blame, Reacts to Cubs Fans' Boos After Poor Play amid $175 million Contract

Joseph ZuckerJun 8, 2026

Chicago Cubs star Alex Bregman was candid about his 2026 performance following Sunday's 2-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants.

"I've been terrible," he said, per ESPN's Jesse Rogers. "I need to play better. Offensively, it's been awful. I've failed many times in this game. I've struggled. I've started slow before. I've started fast before. When you're struggling, there is only one way forward and that's straight, head-on through it. It comes down to executing in the game."

Bregman went 0-for-5 in the series finale. He had an opportunity to tie the game in the bottom of the 10th but popped up to the shortstop with two outs and a runner on third. In the eighth, he also lined into a double play with runners on the corners and nobody out.

The Cubs are just two games over .500 (34-32) and fourth in the National League Central. Recently, the fans at Wrigley Field have made their voices heard.

Bregman understands the frustration.

"Those can be directed at me because I haven't come through with guys in scoring position," he said of the boos. "I have plenty of chances. Guys are getting on base in front of me all the time."

The three-time All-Star isn't providing a great return on the $175 million Chicago invested in him. Through 65 games, he has a .243/.327/.342 slash line with five home runs and 19 RBI. His 95 OPS+ is on pace to be a career low, per Baseball Reference.

Bregman has been particularly bad with runners in scoring position. He's batting just .173 and slugging .187 in those situations.

This isn't a case of a hitter simply being unlucky, either. According to FanGraphs, Bregman's .284 batting average on balls in play is in line with his career mark (.281).

The deeper data confirms what you can see with your eyes. The veteran infielder isn't barreling the ball or getting the kind of elevation like he did in previous seasons.

There's still plenty of time for Bregman to snap out of his funk. Until that happens, he can expect to remain a lightning rod for the fanbase's general angst.
