Zverev came out hot, dominating the first set 6-1, but Cobolli answered by taking the second set 6-4.
After Zverev won the third set, Cobolli had him on the ropes with a 5-3 lead in the fourth set, but Zverev came storming back to tie things up at 5-5 despite seemingly dealing with some discomfort in his lower body.
The match went to an intense tiebreak, but Cobolli shifted the momentum and forced a decider.
While the fourth set was back and forth, Zverev was in complete control in the fifth set and took it 6-1 to claim victory.
With Carlos Alcaraz not competing and Janik Sinner facing an early exit, this year offered a perfect opportunity for the No. 2-seeded Zverev to finally win his first Grand Slam event.
He took down Benjamin Bonzi, Tomáš Macháč, Quentin Halys and Jesper De Jong en route to the semifinal, where he beat Jakub Menšík.
Zverev had appeared in the final for the Australian Open, French Open and US Open coming into this year's tournament, but was still seeking his first major victory. Now, he is the Roland-Garros champion and will look to follow up his run with a big showing at Wimbledon.
