Jared Verse to Wear No. 8 Jersey with Browns, Dillon Gabriel Will Change Number After 1 Season
Cleveland Browns quarterback Dillon Gabriel is reportedly changing his jersey number following his team's trade acquisition of linebacker Jared Verse.
The Browns are waiting to get NFL approval for Gabriel to switch from No. 8, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported Friday.
Garafolo said he wasn't sure what was causing the NFL's delayed approval, but that the wait could have to do with already-printed Gabriel merchandise.
Verse wore No. 8 at Florida State and during his first two seasons with the Los Angeles Rams. Gabriel wore the same number at Oregon and during his rookie season with the Browns.
Both players were wearing No. 8 after Verse joined the Browns for OTAs earlier this week.
The Browns acquired Verse, who recorded 7.5 sacks in his last season with the Rams, alongside multiple draft picks as part of the return from the Myles Garrett trade earlier this week.
Gabriel started six games for the Browns last season before he was benched in favor of fellow rookie Shedeur Sanders. His future with the team has been in question since the Browns used a sixth-round draft pick to bring in Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green this April.
Browns head coach Todd Monken said earlier this week the Browns had "two starting-level quarterbacks" between Sanders and Deshaun Watson.
Gabriel could now be wearing a new number as he potentially battles Green for a third-strong role behind Sanders and Watson this summer.
