Serena Williams Adds Another Tournament to Her Schedule in Tennis Comeback, Details Revealed

Serena Williams' epic comeback to tennis will not be just a one-off.

In addition to her return next week in a doubles match alongside Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko at the HSBC Championships in London, it was announced on Friday that Williams will also play doubles with a TBD partner at the Berlin Tennis Open beginning on June 15.

"Every tournament I add to my schedule right now feels special, and Berlin is no exception," Williams told berlintennisopen.com. "I'm excited to compete in front of the German fans and continue building momentum throughout the grass-court season."

The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion has not played a match since the US Open in 2022. She announced at the time that she was "evolving away" from tennis. However, rumblings about her potential comeback began when she reentered the anti-doping program last year.

Williams is still just one Grand Slam win away from tying women's record holder Margaret Court. She hasn't won a major title since 2017, but the timing of her comeback indicates that she could be eyeing a spot at Wimbledon later this month.

"It's going to be great to see her back out there. Watching her walk off the court in New York, I really thought it was goodbye. Some players, you think, 'oh, they might come back,' but I never thought that that would be the case," former World No. 1 Lindsay Davenport said of Williams' comeback. "You have to think that she's going to ease her way back into singles. Then all of a sudden it's game on again for the Grand Slam race. So I'm here for it."
