Hypothetical NFL Blockbusters After Garrett Trade
The Brownsย acquiredย Verse and three draft picks from the Los Angeles Rams for Garrett on Monday.
Even though the Rams hadย reportedlyย been trying to pursue Garrett for years, Cleveland general manager Andrew Berryย told reportersย on Tuesday that the team had no designs on trading the two-time Defensive Player of the Year until Verse was included in the offer.
There's no one player in the NFL who can replicate what Garrett does, but Verse is a terrific addition to the Browns defense for the 2026 season. He also extends their runway of having a top-tier pass-rusher because he's five years younger than Garrett.
A first-round pick by the Rams in 2024, Verse won Defensive Rookie of the Year in his first season after recording 18 quarterback hits and 4.5 sacks in 17 appearances.
Last season was a step forward for Verse with 27 quarterback hits and 7.5 sacks in 17 starts. When you combine that with him only being 25 and having three more years remaining on his rookie deal, he figures to be a centerpiece for the Browns defense going forward.
The Browns are set up to take a step forward in the near-future thanks to their return from the Garrett trade. Verse is already an impact player and the 2027 first-round pick could give them another one.
Cleveland's future success will ultimately come down to its ability to find a quality starter at the quarterback position, but Verse rushing the passer will ensure the defense remains a strength in 2026 and beyond.
