Shnaider Beats Sabalenka, Updated French Open Women's Bracket at Roland-Garros
The upsets continued at the 2026 French Open, as No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka was stunned by Diana Shnaider 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 in the quarterfinal on Wednesday.
Shnaider overcame a first-set loss and a 5-3 deficit in the second set by winning the final 10 games to advance to her first semifinal at any of the four Grand Slam events.

Sabalenka had been cruising through the tournament and that looked like it was going to continue early against Shnaider. She dominated in the first set and her return game was on point essentially until it wasn't.
The women's top seed converted her first four break-point opportunities in the match and had 37 winners through the first two sets.
It was Sabalenka's fifth attempt to convert a break point that may signaled a shift in the momentum. Holding a 5-4 lead in the second set and two points away from breaking Shnaider to close out the match, she was unable to finish things off.
From that point on, Sabalenka completely unraveled. She had as many points won as unforced errors (14) in the third set. Her 57 total unforced errors were more than twice as many as Shnaider (26).
Sabalenka's loss guarantees there will be two first-time finalists at the French Open this year. She was seeking her first title at Roland Garros after losing to Coco Gauff in the final last year.
The loss also means there is no former major champion in the men's or women's semifinals for the first time since 1977.
The four semifinalists this year are Shnaider, Maja Chwalińska, Mirra Andreeva and Marta Kostyuk. Chwalińska is the biggest surprise from the group, having made the field as a qualifier.
Shnaider's best Grand Slam result prior to the French Open was a run to the fourth round at the 2024 U.S. Open. She will look to continue her magical run in the semifinal against Chwalińska.
This will be the second head-to-head meeting between the two. Shnaider won their previous encounter in 2022 in a W60 event in Istanbul.
