'Not of This Planet,' Uar Bernard Hyped by Jordan Mailata as Eagles LT Predicts Future Breakout
The Philadelphia Eagles selected International Player Pathway prospect Uar Bernard in the seventh round of April's NFL draft, taking a chance on a player who has never played a snap of competitive football but impressed teams with his otherworldly athleticism (4.63-second 40-yard dash, 39-inch vertical leap despite being 6'4" and 306 pounds).
And he's certainly turning heads among his teammates so far.
"Uar is a freak. He's also not of this planet," left tackle Jordan Mailata told reporters on Tuesday. "... He's just freakishly strong, freakishly fast, and I can't even compare him to me, just because he's just, again, not of this world, just by like metrics and numbers-wise. You see his effort on the film, once he puts it all together, I think it's a wrap."
While Bernard's athleticism has turned heads, it was his work ethic that made defensive line coach Clint Hurtt advocate for him during the draft process.
"I'm not putting my stamp on everybody," he noted. "If you don't have a great work ethic, if I don't believe in your character and who you are as a person, I'm not putting my family's well-being in anybody's hands. But when I saw the kids' work ethic and character, great, he's an unbelievable human being. I know as people get a chance to spend some time with him, he's a great kid. So I felt good about doing that."
