Nick Herbig, Steelers Reportedly Agree to $100M Contract Extension, Full Details Revealed

Scott PolacekJun 2, 2026

Nick Herbig has never played for an NFL team outside of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and that won't change anytime soon following Tuesday's reported deal.

According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo and ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Steelers and the linebacker agreed to a four-year, $100 million contract extension that features $42 million in guarantees.

The timing of the deal was particularly notable, as Mike DeFabo of The Athletic reported earlier Tuesday that Herbig and Joey Porter Jr. were "hold ins" looking for contract extensions at OTAs:

Herbig also told reporters his goal was to "be a Steeler for life."

This contract extension is a step in that direction.

The linebacker was previously entering the final year of his rookie deal with some uncertainty hovering over his future, but that is no longer a concern with this development. And the Steelers made sure a young linebacker coming off the best season of his career will remain with the team for the foreseeable future.

Pittsburgh selected Herbig with a fourth-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft, and he established himself as a solid defensive contributor in his first two seasons with a combined 8.5 sacks. However, the 24-year-old took a leap in 2025 and will look to build on that moving forward while playing under this new deal.

Herbig posted 30 tackles, 7.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, three passes defended, one interception and one fumble recovery that he returned for a touchdown in 15 appearances and six starts last season.

He also notched 18 quarterback hits as someone who took advantage of the spacing that came with the additional attention T.J. Watt and Cameron Heyward drew from opposing offensive lines.

If Herbig can continue to do that, this extension will be a worthwhile one for the Steelers.
