How Red Sox Have 'Disappointed' Theo Epstein Revealed in New MLB Rumors
The Boston Red Sox remain in last place in the AL East with a 25-33 record, and senior adviser Theo Epstein reportedly has not been pleased with their performance this year.
Per Tim Healey of the Boston Globe, "multiple league sources" said that Epstein "has been disappointed by the Sox's intense analytical direction" under chief baseball officer Craig Breslow.
The Red Sox hired Breslow in 2023, and he's made major changes to rebuild the team in his vision. Breslow admitted that he can't definitively say that Boston is better off now than before he was hired.
"It's difficult for me to be the person who evaluates that," Breslow said in an interview with Healey. "I came here with a pretty clear vision for the work that needed to be done."
Healey noted that Epstein "has long been a mentor to Breslow, hiring him to the [Chicago] Cubs front office and helping him get the Sox job." However, the longtime MLB general manager isn't as rigid in his approach to analytics as Breslow has been with the Red Sox.
"Theo was an all-forms-of-information guy," one evaluator who was with the Sox during the Epstein era told Healey. "He didn't just live on Carmine [their internal database at the time]. He listened to people."
Breslow told Healey that his communication with Epstein "ebbs and flows," but he "remains a sounding board and valuable resource."
The Red Sox will try to build some positive momentum when they open a three-game series against the division rival Baltimore Orioles (28-32) on Tuesday.
