Patriots' Rhamondre Stevenson, Comedian Matt Rife Collide on Video at Drake Maye's Softball Event
New England Patriots star quarterback Drake Maye hosted his first "MayeDay" Softball Classic on Sunday to support his and his wife's foundation.
The event included a softball game, which featured players as well as celebrities. The game featured a bit of a nerve-wracking moment when New England running back Rhamondre Stevenson was involved in a collision with comedian Matt Rife:
Before the game, however, the event started with a home run derby, in which Maye finished second. The softball game will take place later in the evening.
There were a number of Patriots' players in attendance, most notably cornerback Christian Gonzalez, who has missed spring practices while seeking a new deal with the team.
The teams for the softball game feature a handful of Patriots' players, along with a few celebrities, such as Rife. Maye, his wife and his coach, Mike Vrabel, are on the same team, while the opposing team consists of Gonzalez, quarterback Timmy DeVito, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and more.
Maye's charity, the MayeDay Family Foundation, seeks to "provide children and families enduring hardship with the assistance and support needed to achieve a brighter future."
Along with the home run derby and softball game, MayeDay hosted a silent auction, raffle and other activities.
While Gonzalez's presence at the event isn't that surprising since he's there to support his teammate, it is somewhat notable given the current situation between him and the Patriots.
Gonzalez, a first-round pick in 2023, is entering the final year of his contract, but recently had his $18.1 million option picked up by the team, so he's contractually tied to the Patriots through 2027.
ESPN'sย Mike Reissย reported earlier this offseason that "an expected mega-extension" was coming for Gonzalez, though it appears the two sides haven't gotten close to a new deal yet.
The Pats have OTAs through June 11 before getting into mandatory minicamp starting June 15. Missing OTAs isn't exactly an indicator of whether Gonzalez is heading toward a holdout, but missing mandatory minicamp certainly would be.
