Blue Jays' Jesus Sanchez Injured After Being Hit by Ball Thrown by Fan on Video During Orioles Game

Andrew PetersMay 31, 2026

Jesús Sánchez was forced to exit Sunday's game against the Baltimore Orioles after an unfortunate injury.

The Toronto Blue Jays outfielder was hit by a ball thrown by a fan from the stands. He was removed from the game with a right wrist contusion, but his X-rays came back negative for a fracture.

Sánchez appeared to be having an interaction with a fan before the ball was thrown in his direction, and it hit him in the wrist. He explained after the game that a young fan was hoping to play a game of catch, but it wasn't the right time for it.

"I wasn't trying to play catch right there," Sánchez said through an interpreter. "I just looked at them, and they thought maybe that I want them to throw the ball. It was a complete misunderstanding."

He added that he'll "be all right" and that his wrist just "hurts a little bit."

While there didn't seem to be anything malicious behind the throw, the Orioles released a statement saying that the team has "identified the fan and removed them from the ballpark while we conduct a thorough investigation."

"Yeah, you never know what you're going to see at the ballpark," Toronto manager John Schneider said. "He was kind of talking to a, I think it was a 12-year-old kid ... in a playful manner, like almost let's play catch. I think the kid took it literally."

Schneider added that, even if there was no ill intent, balls shouldn't be coming onto the field during the inning.

Sánchez, who is in his first season with the defending AL champs, has appeared in 57 games this year, hitting six home runs and 28 RBI with a .287 batting average.

The Blue Jays dropped the final game of the series with the Orioles, leaving Baltimore with a pair of wins and two losses.
