MLB Owner Says Expansion Would Be 'Stupid' Amid Nashville, Sacramento Buzz

MLB expansion has been a topic of discussion for years now, but it appears owners and executives aren't on board with the idea.

One owner told Bob Nightengale of USA Today that "expansion would just be stupid." Another owner said it isn't even "being discussed right now," while an executive said they "don't think it's going to happen."

Various markets have been seen as possible expansion locations, with Nashville and Sacramento perhaps being the two most popular. An ownership group in Nashville has already come up with a team name and logo.

Other markets like Vancouver, Salt Lake City, Charlotte, Portland, and Orlando have also been viewed as potential expansion sites.

MLB hasn't expanded since 1998, when the Tampa Bay Rays and Arizona Diamondbacks were added.

There is still no official plan for expansion, but MLB commissioner Rob Manfred discussed in January a split-season format and an in-season tournament that would require at least 32 teams. Manfred first started discussing expansion over a decade ago, but only recently has the idea started to gain more traction.

The commissioner may be ready to expand, but it seems he might be met with some pushback from owners.
