Garrett Crochet Reveals Setback in Injury Rehab, Latest Updates and Timeline for Red Sox Pitcher
Boston Red Sox starter Garrett Crochet hasn't pitched since April, and it remains to be seen when he will return after suffering a setback in his rehab.
Interim manager Chad Tracy told reporters Sunday that Crochet's setback was lat tightness and the plan was to see doctors this week instead of facing batters Tuesday. He will also likely undergo an MRI.
"I was kind of a little far off from a rehab start, so it's very, very early in the build up process," Crochet said, per Tim Healey of the Boston Globe.
Healey noted the southpaw's best-case scenario for returning to the mound without the setback was "going to be probably a few weeks," so there isn't much clarity at this point when he will again see game action.
Crochet's absence has been part of a disappointing season for the Red Sox to this point.
They are 24-33 and in last place in the American League East. They already fired manager Alex Cora and are 12 games behind the first-place Tampa Bay Rays.
Even when Crochet was healthy and pitching this season, he didn't produce like the back-to-back All-Star he was in 2024 and 2025. He has a 6.30 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in six starts and 30 innings. The long ball in particular has been a problem, as he gave up five home runs in those first six starts.
By comparison, the 26-year-old had a 2.59 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and a league-best 255 strikeouts in a league-high 205.1 innings last season for the Red Sox.
Crochet made 32 starts in each of the last two seasons, but he missed the 2022 campaign after undergoing Tommy John surgery and was limited to 12.2 innings in 2023. He seemed to answer any lingering injury questions in 2024 and 2025, but he is dealing with some issues this season for a struggling Red Sox team.
He is missing an important part of the schedule, as Boston finishes a three-game series against the Cleveland Guardians on Sunday before nine straight division games against the Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees and Rays.
