Jahmyr Gibbs' Lions Contract Extension Projected by NFL Insider in Video, RB Could 'Reset' Market

Detroit Lions star Jahmyr Gibbs is set to "reset the running back market in a big way" with his next contract, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported Friday on NFL Live.

Gibbs is expected to receive $20 million or more on a potential extension of his rookie contract, Fowler reported.

"They want to do it," Fowler said about the possible extension. "There's not a lot of progress yet. It's going to take some time."

Gibbs could potentially wait for Bijan Robinson to raise the market ceiling first by signing his own extension with the Atlanta Falcons, Fowler added.

ESPN's Adam Schefter previously reported he thinks the Lions will extend Gibbs "at some point this summer."

The Philadelphia Eagles' Saquon Barkley is currently the highest-paid running back in the NFL with a $20.6 million average annual salary, per Over the Cap.

Both Robinson and Gibbs, who were each selected in the 2023 draft, are currently signed through 2027 after their respective teams activated their fifth-year rookie options.

Gibbs started all 17 games for the Lions last season, recording 243 carries for 1,223 rushing yards with 13 touchdowns.

He also played a key role in the Lions' pass game, in which he added 77 catches for 616 yards and five scores.

Tight end Sam LaPorta is also extension eligible. He was limited to nine games in 2025 due to season-ending back surgery but plays a key role in Detroit's offense when healthy.

The Lions also need to make a contract decision regarding safety Brian Branch, who suffered a torn Achilles last season and is now heading into the final year of his rookie deal.

One member of the Lions' 2023 draft class has already been signed to an extension. Linebacker Jack Campbell inked his own four-year, $81 million deal last week, ranking him second only to the San Francisco 49ers' Fred Warner for the highest average annual salary among linebackers.
