Zach BacharMay 29, 2026

Novak Djokovic suffered a five-set defeat at the hands of Brazilian teenager João Fonseca in the third round at Roland-Garros on Friday.

Fonseca came back after dropping the first two sets of the match to secure a 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 victory.

Djokovic also led 5-4 in the fifth set, but the 24-time Grand Slam champion was ultimately unable to stifle Fonseca's scalding serve down the stretch.

The loss marks Djokovic's earliest exit at Roland-Garros since he was bounced in the third round in 2009.

As for Fonseca, he became the youngest player to take down Djokovic in a Grand Slam at 19 years old. The previous record was held by 20-year-old Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon in 2006.

Fonseca is also the second player to ever defeat Djokovic after losing the first two sets of the match. The 39-year-old was 289-1 in such situations prior to Friday's action.

Fonseca finished the match with 11 aces to go along with a 74 first-serve percentage.

He revealed that he had some doubts regarding his ability to beat Djokovic heading into the match.

"I actually didn't believe I could win the match, I just played and enjoyed being in the court," Fonseca said after his win, per BBC News' Paul Battison, Sophie Brown and Elizabeth Botcherby. "What an idol we have and what a pleasure it was to step on the court against him so I thank him, I am very happy."

"I was just trying to hit the ball as fast as I could, I mean Djokovic doesn't miss and we still think he's 20," he added. "At the end of the match he was more fit than me which is crazy and when the day was getting darker I felt much slower. In the beginning I was struggling with the heat and not feeling good. I just believed I could do aces, it was crazy. I have never done that before I am super happy that I could finish like this."

Djokovic was the only Grand Slam champion still alive at the French Open before his defeat, meaning that no former major champions will play in the round of 16 of a men's singles draw at a major for the first time since 1968.

Fonseca will now await the winner of Friday's clash between Casper Ruud and Tommy Paul in the fourth round.
