Preview
Home-field advantage and a top-16 national seed far from guarantees teams of placement into the super regional round.
A year ago, seven national seeds fell on regional weekend, including the top two overall seeds.
Two years ago, six unseeded teams emerged from the regional round.
The top of the 64-team field in 2026 is elite, though, which makes upsets harder to happen on paper.
UCLA comes into the NCAA tournament with the second-best staff ERA. Georgia Tech leads the nation in batting average. Georgia is first in home runs and fourth in team batting average.
All three of those teams are expected to cruise through regional weekend. It would be no surprise to see all three of them not lose.
Other national seeds are more vulnerable. For example, the North Carolina Tar Heels have one of the toughest regional brackets to get through. Two perennial powers, the Tennessee Volunteers and East Carolina Pirates, are grouped with UNC.
The Auburn Tigers and Nebraska Cornhuskers each have a pair of power-conference squads playing in their respective regionals.
The best potential Cinderella story is the Jacksonville State Gamecocks. The Conference USA side went 46-13 in the regular season. It is a No. 3 seed in the Hattiesburg regional.
Jacksonville State has to beat the Virginia Cavaliers and Southern Miss Golden Eagles to advance, but it has the best resume on paper to be the surprise of regional weekend.
The 16 regional winners will compete head-to-head on super regional weekend, which takes place from June 5-8. The College World Series begins on June 12.
