New NFL Trade Rumors on Josh Sweat 1 Year After Huge Cardinals Free-Agent Contract

Timothy RappMay 26, 2026

The Arizona Cardinals "have received trade calls" on defensive end Josh Sweat, according to NFL reporter Jordan Schultz, just one year removed from signing him to a four-year, $76.4 million deal.

Last week, Cardinals insider Kyle Odegard reported that Sweat wasn't happy in Arizona:

Schultz also added that Sweat had a close relationship with former head coach Jonathan Gannon, who was fired in the offseason and replaced by Mike LaFleur. Sweat and Gannon were also paired on the Philadelphia Eagles between the 2021-22 seasons, when Gannon was the defensive coordinator.

Jenny Venerable of PHNX Sports reported Tuesday that Sweat previously requested a trade after Gannon's firing.

Gannon is now the defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers.

Sweat spent his first seven NFL seasons (2018-24) in Philadelphia, recording 43 sacks, 54 tackles for loss and 97 quarterback hits across 104 games. That earned him a big deal last offseason and he lived up to the hype, finishing with 12 sacks, 13 tackles for loss, 17 quarterback hits, four forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and two passes defensed.

It wouldn't be a shock if the Cardinals moved him after June 1, when the cap ramifications would be far more manageable.

And plenty of teams would be happy to add a veteran edge-rusher of Sweat's pedigree. It won't be a surprise if he's ultimately moved, though the Cardinals may not be inclined to weaken their defense with such a trade. But for a rebuilding team, adding more future draft capital would make sense.
