'Big Ass' Aaron Judge Was Compared to Barry Sanders During Football Game by Fresno State HC

Scott PolacekMay 25, 2026

It's safe to say Aaron Judge made the right decision to pursue baseball at a professional level, but he might have made some waves in the NFL as well if a touch football game from his freshman season at Fresno State was any indication.

ESPN's Ryan Hockensmith reported on a 2011 game in which the 6'7" Judge was selected first overall by senior infielder Danny Muno for the Bulldogs' annual touch football game despite being just a freshman.

"I'll take Big Ass," Muno said while announcing what turned out to be an excellent pick.

According to Hockensmith, Judge caught a wide receiver screen on the first play and juked his way right through the entire defense for a touchdown.

"What was that?" head coach Mike Batesole exclaimed. "He's Barry-freaking-Sanders out there."

Fresno State first baseman Jordan Ribera said, "He made someone just about tear their ACL, then went 40 yards for a touchdown as he juked out everybody else. You don't think someone that size can move like that."

Judge led his side to victory as the MVP and seemingly announced himself as an athletic star in the making.

Of course, he ended up sticking with baseball and is now one of the faces of his generation with a resume that includes three American League MVPs, an AL Rookie of the Year, seven All-Star selections, five Silver Sluggers and a batting title.

The New York Yankees slugger has 385 career home runs and has shown no signs of slowing down considering he leads the American League with 17 long balls this season.

When he is eventually inducted into the Hall of Fame, his plaque will undoubtedly list all of those accomplishments from the baseball diamond while highlighting his accolades as a Yankees legend.

But some of his former Fresno State teammates will surely always remember him best as the Barry Sanders-esque big man who was torching the defense in their touch football game.
