Paul KasabianMay 24, 2026

Marta Kostyuk revealed after her first round victory (6-2, 6-3) over Oksana Selekhmeteva at Roland-Garros that a Russian missile strike occurred near her parents' home in Kyiv, Ukraine before she took the court on Sunday.

"I'm incredibly proud of myself today," Kostyuk said during her on-court interview (h/t ESPN's D'Arcy Maine). "I think it was one of the most difficult matches of my career. This morning, 100 meters away from my parents' house, a missile destroyed the building.

"It was a very difficult morning for me. I didn't know how this match was going to turn around for me. I didn't know how I would handle it."

Kostyuk also spoke post-match about the difficulty of playing today amid the tragedy (h/t Ukrainian journalist Kateryna Lisunova).

"It was one of the most difficult matches of my career. This morning, 100 meters away from my parents' house, the missile destroyed the building and it was very difficult morning for me. I didn't know how this match is gonna turn around for me. I didn't know how I will handle it. I've been crying part of the morning, and I'm…You know, I don't wanna talk about myself today. I'm obviously very pleased to be in the second round, but all my thoughts and all my heart goes to people of Ukraine today. Thank you so much for coming out. Thank you. Slava Ukraini!"

She also spoke at her post-match press conference about the strikes, showing a picture of their significant damage near her family's home via her phone (h/t José Morgado of The Record).

Kostyuk, who entered Roland-Garros as the No. 15 seed, extended her dominance on clay this season with the victory.

The 23-year-old won the Open Capfinances Rouen Métropole title in April and the Madrid Open title in May. The Madrid title marked her first-ever WTA 1000 trophy.

On Sunday, Kostyuk had 20 winners, including 12 via her forehand. She'll now face American Katie Voleynets in the second round on Wednesday.
