Bill Belichick Says Iconic 'No Days Off' Patriots Motto Was Misunderstood, Reveals Meaning

Julia StumbaughMay 19, 2026

Former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick says fans misunderstood the "no days off" motto he famously chanted during the Patriots' Super Bowl LI victory parade.

The UNC football coach explained his motto was about working hard at work, not avoiding rest days, around the 2:19:00 mark of Monday's episode of Pardon My Take.

"It's funny, because most people don't really understand what that means, or what it meant to us, I should say," Belichick said. "What it meant to us was: When you come to work, you go to work. You don't come to work and dilly-dally around, like I was here, I broke a sweat, I showed up, and go home. That's a day off.

"When we say no days off, we meant, you come to work, you're ready to work, you're prepared, you put in a good day's work. Maybe tomorrow is an off day— that's okay, for a recovery day. That's fine. I'm not saying, don't take a day off. We're saying, don't come to the stadium and take a day off."

Belichick went on to say that philosophy was enforced by former Patriots stars including Tom Brady, Julian Edelman, Dont'a Hightower and David Andrews.

"If a guy was kind of, if we would jump offside, or do something dumb, then they would kind of get on him. Like, 'You just come in here, fool around, take a day off?'" Belichick said. "'Don't even come here, then. If you don't care enough, then just don't show up, because we can't trust you.'

"That was the connotation, but of course in the hype train of the Patriots, I'm sure it sold towels or beer mugs or whatever, and it was used in a different context."

Belichick will now look to take that philosophy back to Chapel Hill, where he is heading into his second season as a college head coach after leading the Tar Heels to a 4-8 record in 2025.

Rebounding from last season will begin with Belichick choosing which of the five quarterbacks on the UNC roster starts next season after Gio Lopez transferred to Wake Forest.
