Alexander Rossi Hospitalized After Crash at Indianapolis 500 Practice

Driver Alexander Rossi was hospitalized Monday following a crash during practice for Sunday's Indianapolis 500.

Michael Marot of the Associated Press reported Rossi, who won the 2016 Indianapolis 500, spun through a turn and hit the outside wall. The impact caused the car to skid down the track with its rear dragging along the top of the wall for a short amount of time.

Pato O'Ward then hit the side of Rossi's car as part of a crash that also involved Romain Grosjean.

"Rossi appeared unsteady when he first tried to climb into a vehicle that took him to the track's infield medical care center," Marot wrote while also reporting O'Ward and Grosjean were cleared following brief stops in the medical center.

Rossi had plenty of momentum heading into the race prior to this crash.

He finished second during Indy pole qualifying behind only Alex Palou. The second position marked Rossi's career-best starting point and puts him in position to challenge for another Indy 500 title.

Palou is the reigning race champion and has won three of the six races in 2026. He has also earned pole position for three of the last four races.

"It wasn't clear whether the crash would impact the 33-car starting grid for this weekend's sold-out race," Marot noted. "Three of the eight fastest drivers in Sunday's qualifying—Rossi, O'Ward and Conor Daly—all sustained damage to their cars, as did Grosjean, who qualified 24th."

This year's Indianapolis 500 is scheduled to start Sunday at 12:45 p.m. ET.
