Arsenal Transfer News: Huge Deals Wanted by Arsene Wenger, Latest Rumours

Stuart NewmanAug 8, 2015

Arsenal are reportedly edging towards to landing the marquee signing that fans have been calling for all summer.

That’s according to BT Sport presenter Jake Humphrey, who tweeted he’s been informed by a reliable source that the Gunners are closing in on a big-name star:

Which player would, indeed, make Arsenal Premier League title contenders, though? Well, one name automatically springs to mind.

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema is seemingly linked with a move to the Emirates before, during and after every transfer window, but the torrent of rumours could well become a reality this time around.

The 27-year-old scored 15 goals and created 10 more for Real in 2014/15, and such figures could well propel Arsenal to the top of the Premier League tree.

Legendary front man Thierry Henry thinks so, too, as he claimed that if Benzema joined the Gunners, they “would win the league” (via WhoScored).

So, he could well be the man Humprey’s source is referring to. Plus, Italian journalist Emanuele Giulianelli has said that Arsenal representatives are currently in Madrid getting the deal over the line—as reported by Izzy Horsefield of the Daily Express:

"

Arsenal mission in Madrid to close the deal for Benzema. Offer will be around €50 million. Benzema himself asked Real Madrid to join Arsenal. The meeting is to agree the payment terms.

When it comes to Benzema, Arsenal fans are sensibly adopting a "believe it when they see it" policy, but such news will be music to their ears.

The Gunners need a prolific striker to all but complete their world-class setup; and even though the Real Madrid man would set them back a reported €50 million, it could prove a great bit of business.

Mario Gotze

Arsenal have been handed a boost in their reported mission to land Bayern Munich star Mario Gotze after he refused to rule out a move away from the Allianz Arena.

Speaking with ZDF Television, the German said that despite the fact he’s enjoying his time at Bayern, his future remains uncertain—via James Whaling of the Mirror:

"

From my side, I can say that I'm happy to play here, with these fans, with this club—it's a fantastic job. I'm very happy with everything around me and with the things that happen here, but there are always two sides to everything.

Gotze has an infamously rocky relationship with Bayern manager Pep Guardiola, and his bid to play more regular football could well see him move on to pastures new.

His agent Volker Struth further fuelled the rumours of a departure when talking to Tuttosport, saying his client is open to a switch—reported by Whaling:

"

Mario has made it clear that his last two seasons have not been idyllic. However, it's also true that no club has come forward with an offer. Bayern have not ruled out a possible transfer, just as we won't rule out any possible opportunity, to stay or go abroad. There's still a long way to go until the end of the transfer window, so anything can still happen.

Are Arsenal really interested in the 23-year-old, though?

It’s difficult to envisage manager Arsene Wenger strengthening an area of his squad that’s already so strong, while Gotze will also demand a huge transfer fee.

Although Gunners fans may get frustrated with Wenger in the transfer window, he’s intelligent in only splashing the cash where it needs to be splashed—landing another creative midfielder is far from essential.

When it comes down to it, Arsenal would be much better off using their financial resources to target the Benzema transfer full on; and if these latest rumours are to be believed, that’s exactly what they’re doing.
