Rory McIlroy Has Heated Exchange With Fan During PGA Championship Final Round

Andrew PetersMay 17, 2026

Rory McIlroy had a frustrating final day at the PGA Championship on Sunday, and those frustrations boiled over when he had a heated exchange with a fan.

On the 16th hole, as McIlroy looked to mount a comeback, the two-time Masters champion left a shot out of the rough short of the green and bounced into a sand trap.

A fan then shouted "U-S-A!" at McIlroy before he told the fan to "shut up" while adding an expletive, per ESPN.

McIlroy is used to hearing it from the fans, with some interactions being more extreme than others. After fan behavior at the 2025 Ryder Cup, PGA of America issued an apology for what McIlroy endured.

While the words from fans on Sunday weren't that bad, they perhaps came at the wrong time as McIlroy battled through a tough round. He had two birdies but bogeyed on the 13th hole as he finished tied for seventh.

"I think not birdieing the two par-5s and making the bogey at the drivable par-4 13th," he said. "To me, I felt like I played the golf I needed to play the rest of the way. If I birdied the two par-5s and turned that 5 into a 3 on 13, the day looks very different."

England's Aaron Rai won the PGA Championship to secure his first major championship.
