Justin Thomas Tells Hilarious Story About Being Clubhouse Leader After 4th Round at PGA Championship

Justin Thomas went into the clubhouse on Sunday temporarily atop the leaderboard at the PGA Championship, though plenty of golfers remained in the field.

He offered some sage advice on how not to handle the wait when finishing atop the leaderboard early in the day:

"I don't know if there's an art. I can tell you how there isn't, because it happened to me one time in Hartford," he told reporters. "It was actually the same day that Jim Furyk shot a 58, I think it was. I shot like a 61 or 62. And I finished pretty similar, like the leaders were on like the middle of the front nine. And I had a buddy out there that was watching me and we went in the clubhouse, probably had four or five beers at lunch. And next thing you know it's two-and-a-half hours later, and I'm still the leader in the clubhouse. The wind picked up to like 15-20 mph, and the leaders were on, like, 15. Jimmy was caddying for me at the time, he was at a Subway like an hour-and-a-half away. Like, what do we do? I've never not wanted to be in a playoff before, but I kinda didn't want to be in a playoff then. It wouldn't have been a good situation. So I'm not going to do that, I promise you that."

Thomas shot a final-round 65 and finished five under for the tournament. He probably can safely enjoy a few beers, however—at the time of publication Aaron Rai had supplanted him on the leaderboard (six under), three other players were tied with him and Rory McIlroy was among the players lurking just one stroke back.
