Rory McIlroy Injury Cuts Short PGA Championship Practice Round, Latest Updates on Golf Star

Six-time major champion Rory McIlroy ended his practice round early on Tuesday ahead of the PGA Championship as he deals with a bothersome and persistent blister on his right pinky toe.

Kevin Van Valkenburg of Fried Egg Golf captured McIlroy before he stopped his round prior to the fourth hole at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

PGATour.com staff provided more information.

"McIlroy played the first three holes at Aronimink Golf Club on Tuesday afternoon, but showed numerous signs of pain that caused him to end the day early. He was limping on his way to the third tee box. At one point, McIlroy sat on the ground in the third fairway to take his shoe off. He left after three holes.

"It's uncertain whether McIlroy's decision was purely precautionary or the sign of a larger issue. McIlroy spoke to media on Tuesday morning, prior to his practice.

"He went through his normal routine, hitting balls at the range and practicing his short game. But he was in noticeable pain once he began his practice round."

Adam Schupak of Golfweek relayed comments McIlroy made on Tuesday morning regarding the blister.

McIlroy was also seen limping on Sunday at the Truist Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina. He explained that to reporters as well.

"I've got a blister on my pinky toe on my right foot," McIlroy said, per NUCLR GOLF. But it's underneath my nail. So I can't really get to it or so it's a little sore, but I'll be all right."

McIlroy had injury concerns earlier this year, when he withdrew from the Arnold Palmer Invitational prior to the third round after suffering a lower back injury during a workout in the gym.

However, he was able to participate in the Players Championship the following week. One month later, McIlroy took down the Masters for the second straight time, winning the event at 12-under.

Now the 37-year-old is looking to make it two-for-two on majors for the season. McIlroy is also a two-time PGA Championship winner after earning victories in 2012 and 2014.

He's currently scheduled to tee off at 8:40 a.m. ET on Thursday with Jordan Spieth and Jon Rahm.
