South African Golfer Nearly Breaks Tiger Woods' Record, Wins Event by 14 Strokes
South African golfer Yurav Premlall pulled off a feat that hasn't been seen in over two decades.
Premlall, who is ranked No. 598 in the world, won the Catalunya Championship by 14 shots, one short of Tiger Woods' record for the largest margin of victory set at the 2000 U.S. Open.
"I can't give myself enough credit today, and I'm not really a person to say that. It was probably the most complete performance I've ever put through," Premlall said after his first career victory on the European tour, per the Associated Press.
Premlall shot 9-under 63 for the second straight day in Sunday's final round to finish with an overall score of -28. Fellow South African Shaun Norris finished second at -14.
Before his victory this weekend, Premlall hadn't secured a top-30 finish this season and missed the cut in four of his eight appearances.
Premlall joined some elite company with his win at the Catalunya Championship, so perhaps this is the start of a promising career.
