Giants' Tony Vitello Reacts to Fans Booing During 13-3 Loss to Pirates in New Trending Video

Adam WellsMay 10, 2026

Things are not going well for the San Francisco Giants in Tony Vitello's first season as manager, with fans showering the team with boos during their 13-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday.

Asked about the fan reaction after the game, Vitello understood their perspective by saying things "got to the point where it wasn't an acceptable effort" by the Giants.

The loss dropped San Francisco's record to 15-24 this season, worst in the NL West. They are tied with the New York Mets (15-24) and Los Angeles Angels (15-25) for the fewest wins in MLB entering Sunday.

It was the Giants' 10th loss by at least five runs. Their minus-49 run differential is the worst in MLB. The Baltimore Orioles are the only other team with a run differential of at least minus-40.

The 20 hits for Pittsburgh were the team's most in a nine-inning game this decade.

Vitello was hired by the Giants last October after Bob Melvin was fired following an 81-81 record in 2025. It was an outside-the-box move because Vitello had no previous MLB experience, as either a player or coach.

The 47-year-old had been coaching at the college level since 2003, including a successful eight-year stint as Tennessee's head coach. He turned the Vols program around, leading them to six NCAA tournament appearances and a College World Series title in 2024.

Not all of the issues for the Giants so far in 2026 on Vitello because this was a deeply-flawed roster to begin with, but the heat is going to ramp up on everyone as they are on pace for their worst season by winning percentage since going 62-100 in 1985.
