Watch Mike Vrabel Lead Punt Drill in Video from Patriots' Rookie Camp, Players React to HC

Joseph ZuckerMay 10, 2026

New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel showed his players exactly what he expects to be done when the team was going through a punt drill at rookie minicamp on Saturday.

After the players completed a rep, Vrabel got into position and showed what he believes to be the proper blocking technique.

"That's great to have a coach who is involved," linebacker Namdi Obiazor said, per ESPN's Mike Reiss. "Sometimes they can kind of be in the back and let the position coaches kind of do their thing, but I definitely love how Coach Vrabel is involved with practice."

Offensive tackle Dametrious Crownover is also appreciative of Vrabel's tutelage.

"I've learned a lot from him already, just from being here the last two days," he said. "What it takes to play offensive line at the elite level. He's not going to let you slack off and make sure he's getting the best out of you."

Vrabel retired following the 2010 season, having spent 14 years in the league. On occasion, his competitive fire still burns.

Last summer, the 50-year-old got in the middle of a scuffle between the Patriots and Washington Commanders during a joint practice. Ahead of the 2025 draft, he challenged Will Campbell to block him like he would an on-rushing defender. The coach wound up on the floor.

It's no surprise that Patriots players love to see their coach take such a direct approach at times.
