Historic John Cena Classic, New WWE Title and Tournament Format Announced at Backlash
WWE legend John Cena announced a new annual event, the "John Cena Classic," at WWE Backlash on Saturday.
"Your voice will be heard louder than ever before," Cena said (h/t On3.com's Daniel Hager). "You, the audience, the fan will vote to crown the champion of the 'John Cena Classic.' And, every participant qualifies, which also means for the first time in history, a Superstar might not win their match, but their hustle could earn your respect, earn your heart, win your vote, and you can still crown them the 'John Cena Classic' champion. This is a single event that embodies everything I stand for and everything I value."
The competition will contain a new championship and include NXT Superstars as well as WWE Superstars, with fans voting to crown the champion.
Cena, who also hosted WrestleMania 42, previously teased his latest announcement in a Monday post on X.
The 49-year-old retired from in-ring competition following a loss to Gunther at Saturday Night's Main Event in Dec. 2025.
WWE Superstars and NXT Superstars similarly clashed during the event, an idea that was pitched by Cena (h/t M. Gomez of Cageside Seats).
While the 17-time world champion is staying retired, a new event bearing his name will be coming soon.
