JJ Wetherholt gave the St. Louis Cardinals a fifth-inning lead with a Little League grand slam against the San Diego Padres on Friday night.

Wetherholt sent a base hit toward right fielder Fernando Tatís Jr., who was unable to handle the ball before all four runners made it home.

Wetherholt's hit sent home the first runs of the game and gave the Cardinals a 4-0 lead in San Diego.

The Cardinals had started out the inning with singles from Masyn Winn and Nathan Church before Victor Scott II walked to load the bases.

Wetherholt had hit a groundout to the pitcher in the third inning before sending all three runners home in his second at-bat of the game.

A first-round pick in the 2024 draft, Wetherholt made history in his MLB debut back on March 27.

Not only was he the first Cardinals rookie since 1949 to debut in the leadoff spot, he also was the first Cardinal to record a home run on his first MLB hit on Opening Day since 1957.

Wetherholt went into Friday having slashed .236/.355/.421 with seven home runs, 18 RBI and 20 walks through 37 games.

He was credited with a single and one RBI on his inside-the-park home run as Tatís was assessed a fielding error.

That error marked another rough spot in what has so far been a slow start to the season for Tatís, who has been bumped down the Padres lineup after marking a career-low .622 OPS and no home runs through his first 36 games of the season.

Both the Padres and Cardinals went into Friday's game with identical 22-15 records. The Cardinals are four games behind the Chicago Cubs for the top of the NL Central, while the Padres and one game back in their chase of the Los Angeles Dodgers for the NL West lead.
