Barracuda Championship 2015: Leaderboard Scores and Highlights from Friday

Joe PantornoAug 7, 2015

Day 2 of the Barracuda Championship cut the field in half, while scores continued to plummet Friday.

Unlike traditional golf where strokes are added or deducted with each hole's result, points are rewarded for each golfer's finish instead. Here is the Modified Stableford scoring breakdown:

Double-Eagle: 8 points

Birdie: 2 points

Par: 0 points

Bogey: -1 point

Double-Bogey or worse: -3 points

Zack Sucher came into Friday's second round as the Barracuda Championship's early leader, posting 18 points, three ahead of second-place Patrick Rodgers.

Here is a look at the tournament's updated leaderboard with a look at some of the day's most notable performers.

T1Brendan Steele2618
T1Andres Gonzales2621
T3J.J. Henry2411
T3Jonas Blixt2412
5Kyle Reifers2314
6David Toms229
T7Tom Hoge219
T7Zack Sucher213
T7Jason Allred2110
T7Chris Smith2110
T7Robert Garrigus219
T7Patrick Rodgers216
T7Will Wilcox2112

A tie at the top of the leaderboard sees Brendan Steele and Andres Gonzales used monster days to reach an overall score of 26 points apiece after the second round.

Gonzales had a Stableford-record 21 points in his second round to gain a share of the lead. With just one bogey on the day, Gonzales birdied 11 of a possible 18 holes.

The PGA Tour showed Gonzales' finish:

While he was not the most accurate on his drives, with just a 53.57 percent accuracy rating, Gonzales averaged 320 yards on his tee shots.

On any other day, Steele's 18 points on Friday would have matched a Stableford record, but it was overshadowed by Gonzales' outing.

With seven birdies on the day, what really put Steele over the top was the five points gained by an eagle on two.

The PGA Tour took a look at Steele's approach on his final hole of the day, which led to a birdie:

Behind them in a tie for second is Jonas Blixt and J.J. Henry, each with 24 points after another consistent outing respectively.

Like the first round, Blixt recorded 12 points in the second round after a big back-nine performance launched him to the top.

With three points on the first nine holes, Blixt recorded five birdies on the back nine, including three straight from the No. 13 to No. 15 holes. Without two bogeys, Blixt would have been looking at a 16-point day, putting him at 28 overall.

Blixt is joined by Henry, who scored 11 points on the day. He was clean through 15 holes, recording five birdies before a bogey on 16 knocked him back a few spots. But he managed to finish strong on 18 with a birdie to make his way to second place.

Entering the day in the lead after a record-tying 18-point performance on Thursday, Sucher dropped six places, sitting in a tie for seventh place, with three points on Friday, for a score of 21 overall.

Starting his afternoon with a bogey on 10, Sucher had one point going into the front nine. After two straight birdies on three and four, he bogeyed four of his last five holes, withholding him from staying at the top of the leaderboard.

While this style of play promotes aggressive play, consistency, like in any sport, it has shown in the first two rounds that it is still the way to go. If Blixt and Henry are able to keep this rate of play up, they will have a score in the mid-40s by the end of the Barracuda Championship.

But don't count out Sucher, Gonzales or Steele yet. If he's able to rattle off another record-setting performance, then the leaderboard will be looking up at him.
