New NFL Rumors Reveal Jacoby Brissett's QB1 Status After Cardinals' Carson Beck NFL Draft Pick

Julia StumbaughMay 8, 2026

The Arizona Cardinals are reportedly preparing to head into the 2026 season with Jacoby Brissett as their starting quarterback despite his holdout from offseason workouts.

ESPN's Josh Weinfuss reported Friday that Brissett "has been informed by the Cardinals that he is their starting quarterback."

"That was a shift from March, right after Kyler Murray was released, when Brissett had not been told he was the starter-in-waiting, according to a source," Weinfuss wrote.

Weinfuss' report comes after NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported in April that Brissett was skipping voluntary workouts in search of "an extension that pays him as the starter."

Brissett has one year remaining on his current contract on which he is owed $1.5 million in guaranteed salary, per Spotrac.

The Cardinals committed to a change at starting quarterback when the franchise officially released Murray after seven seasons in March.

Weinfuss reported at the time that Cardinals had yet to tell Brissett whether he or Gardner Minshew would be starting in Murray's absence.

The Cardinals then used a third-round pick to draft former Miami quarterback Carson Beck.

As recently as April 29, Cardinals general Monti Ossenfort told Mad Dog Sports Radio's Adam Schein he felt there would be a "great competition" between Brissett and Minshew.

"We'll just see how that competition plays out in that room, and in the end the guy who's gonna give us the best chance to win, that's who's gonna be out there," Ossenfort said on April 29.

Brissett started 12 games for the Cardinals last season, giving him experience playing with returning pass-catchers like Marvin Harrison Jr., Michael Wilson and Trey McBride.

The 33-year-old quarterback could be hoping that experience will help give him enough leverage to get more of his $9.2 million deal guaranteed before mandatory minicamp starts June 8.
