As of Tuesday, the field features 154 players in all with two additional spots to be filled by the Myrtle Beach Classic winner and Truist Championship winner. Both of those events start Thursday, and the Truist Championship is one of the PGA Tour's signature events this season.
Many of the marquee players who will participate in the PGA Championship, including McIlroy, are in the field at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte for the Truist Championship.
Notably, Quail Hollow Club is where last year's PGA Championship took place.
Scheffler won that one, and he will look to defend his crown at the event as he rounds into form following three consecutive second-place finishes at the Masters, RBC Heritage and Cadillac Championship.
He also won the American Express in January and has top-five finishes at the WM Phoenix Open and AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am this year. It is a testament to his greatness that so many top-five finishes, including a runner-up at the Masters, has been something of a step back compared to his brilliant 2025.
After all, he won the PGA Championship, the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, the Memorial, the Open Championship, the BMW Championship and the Procore Championship last season.
But it is McIlroy who enters this year's PGA Championship with the major momentum after he won his second consecutive Masters in April. He won the PGA Championship in 2012 and 2014 as one of a number of competitors in this year's field with a history of success in this event.
Schauffele, Koepka, Thomas, Mickelson, Morikawa and Day are also among those who have won the PGA Championship since McIlroy last did. Koepka won the event 2018, 2019 and 2023 and will look to add a fourth Wanamaker Trophy to his collection next week.
But there is a loaded field that will be standing in his way.
