Prior to the race, Golden Tempo wasn't considered by many fans and experts as a winner.

He beat out pre-race favorite Renegade at the finish line. Renegade was the only one of the top three favored horses to place inside the top five.

The team behind Golden Tempo took home a $3.1 million winners' purse.

That team included the first female trainer to win the Kentucky Derby, Cherie DeVaux, and first-time Derby-winning jockey Jose Ortiz.

Ortiz became the ninth jockey in the 152-year history of the Derby to win the Kentucky Oaks and Derby in the same weekend.

Ortiz completed his personal Triple Crown of victories on Saturday. He won the Belmont Stakes in 2017 and Preakness Stakes in 2022.

The 32-year-old beat out his brother, Irad Ortiz Jr., who rode Renegade to second place.

Renegade was the only one of the top pre-race favorites to come close to the victory.

Renegade was the favored horse for most of the week and it came a few lengths away from cashing in on that status.

Commandment and Further Ado, the two other favorites, finished seventh and 11th.

Ocelli produced another surprise in the top three. The 70-1 horse entered the field as an alternate.

Chief Wallabee and Danon Bourbon rounded out the top five. The top five horses all brought home money for their respective teams.

Renegade's second-place finish brought in $1 million, Ocelli's third-place finish was worth $500,000, Chief Wallabee earned $250,000 for fourth and Danon Bourbon earned $150,000 in fifth.
