Stanford, Mauro's alma mater, shared a condolence message on social media:

An official cause of death has not been announced.

Mauro played four seasons at Stanford from 2010 to 2013, winning a Rose Bowl as part of the 2012 team. He finished his college career with 21.5 tackles for loss and 11 sacks in 47 games.

After not being selected in the 2014 NFL draft, Mauro signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted free agent. He was released by the club as part of final roster cuts before landing with the Arizona Cardinals.

Mauro appeared in five games with Arizona as a rookie, then became a key part of the defensive line rotation over the next three years. He joined the New York Giants as a free agent prior to the 2018 season, then played one year with the Oakland Raiders in 2019.

The Cardinals brought Mauro back for the final two years of his NFL career from 2020 to '21. He appeared in a total of 80 games over eight seasons, recording 20 tackles for loss and five sacks.
