Top Dark-Horse Contender
The Puma
If you were ranking the Derby horses on name alone, The Puma would be at the top.
After all, you can't name a horse The Puma and have it be slow.
The Puma comes into Churchill Downs with a quartet of top-four finishes in 2026, including a win over Further Ado at the Tampa Bay Derby in March.
The 10-1 horse also took second behind Commandment at the Florida Derby.
The results in fields alongside the top Derby horses are there for you to trust The Puma as one of the top contenders at 10-1 odds or higher.
Potente
It's easy to trust any horse trained by Bob Baffert at the Derby.
The six-time Derby-winning trainer has two horses in the field. Potente is the better racer of the two.
Potente won the San Felipe Stakes in March and took second behind fellow Derby horse So Happy at the Santa Anita Derby at the start of April.
The 20-1 horse has a potential advantage in start position as well. He is coming out of Post No. 13. He could clear a lot of the long shots in the field at the start and have a clear path to the front.
No matter which way you break it down, it's easy to throw faith behind a dark-horse candidate with such excellent pedigree preparing it for Saturday.
Predictions
It's difficult to ignore the winning pedigree that the three favorites have.
Commandment, Renegade and Further Ado are all strong horses, so it will take an impressive race out of any dark-horse contenders to take home the first leg of the Triple Crown.
- Commandment
- Further Ado
- Renegade
- Potente
