American Hailey Baptiste Upsets No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka at Madrid Open Ahead of Roland-Garros

Hailey Baptiste, one of the rising stars in women's tennis, picked up the biggest win of her career on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old American downed world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 2-6 6-2 7-6 (6) at the Madrid Open, moving on to the semifinals, where she'll face Mirra Andreeva.

Sabalenka came into Tuesday's match on a 15-game winning streak and looked poised to keep the streak alive. Baptiste, however, came in confident after facing Sabalenka just a few weeks prior at the Miami Open.

"I played her a few weeks ago and it was kind of a close match," Baptiste said in her post-match press conference. "I just got broken once in each set. So I had a better idea of how to play her, and how I should play, adjustments I needed to make. So I think I just went in trying to play my game, still doing the same things that I've been doing, but I had a few adjustments I needed to make from the last time we played."

Baptiste has had a big week, as she now has three top-10 wins at the Madrid Open. She beat No. 8 Jasmine Paolini in the third round, Belinda Bencic in the fourth round and now Sabalenka. She'll get the chance for a fourth win over a top-10 opponent on Thursday when she goes up against the No. 9-ranked Andreeva, who beat Leylah Fernandez to move on to the semis.

Thursday's match will be Baptiste's first-ever WTA 1000 semifinal, but likely won't be her last. She'll look to finish off the tournament strong and carry her momentum into the Roland-Garros in just a few weeks.
