Mason Miller Reacts to Controversial Call Ending His Historic Padres Scoreless Innings Streak

Adam WellsApr 28, 2026

San Diego Padres closer Mason Miller isn't sweating an apparent wrong call in the top of the ninth inning that led to him allowing his first runs of the season in Monday's 9-7 win over the Chicago Cubs.

"The call is what it is," Miller told reporters after the game. "I thought I saw something different, but he was a lot closer than I was. And I think everybody in the stadium had an opinion, but ultimately it's only his that matters, so that's the cards we were dealt."

Leading off for the Cubs in the ninth, Matt Shaw hit a little dribbler that rolled along the third-base line that appeared to cross the foul line when third baseman Ty France picked it up.

However, home-plate umpire Dan Merzel ruled the ball was still in fair territory, Shaw was credited with a single and would come around to score on a Nico Hoerner groundout three batters later.

After some discussion with Padres manager Craig Stammen, Merzel did consult with third-base umpire Shane Livensparger about the call. Livensparger supported the initial call and the play was not reviewable.

"It stopped rolling," France said. "I thought it was foul, but they said otherwise. They said they both had it fair and it's a non-reviewable play."

Miller, who allowed just four hits and no runs in his first 13 appearances of the season, gave up two runs on three hits against the Cubs. The right-hander had a streak of 34.2 scoreless innings dating back to Aug. 6, 2025.

It's the eighth-longest scoreless streak by a reliever in MLB history.

Despite the slight hiccup on Monday, Miller is off to an incredible start this season. He leads MLB with 10 saves in 14 appearances, with a 1.26 ERA, 28 strikeouts, six hits allowed and two walks over 14.1 innings.

The Padres (19-9) are right on the heels of the Los Angeles Dodgers (20-9) for first place in the NL West.
