Tyree Wilson Reacts to Saints Trade, Potential 'Bust' Label and Expectations After Raiders Career
Former first-round pick Tyree Wilson expressed hope a "fresh start" will help him live up to the hype surrounding his draft selection following his trade from the Las Vegas Raiders to the New Orleans Saints.
The Saints moved back late in the 2026 NFL draft in order to acquire the defensive end, who was originally selected by the Raiders with the No. 7 pick of the 2023 draft.
"It's a blessing to be a high first-round pick, but you're always going to have the label," Wilson said around the 6:40 mark of his introductory press conference. "They look at you as the franchise guy. On the outside looking in, the fans want you ready immediately, like the first day you step on the field.

"But it always don't work out that way. Everybody's timetable in the NFL is different. But I'm glad I'm here, I'm glad for the fresh start and I'm ready to dominate on the field."
Wilson credited Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby and former defensive line coach Rob Leonard, who has since been promoted to DC in Las Vegas, with helping him grow his game over his first three NFL seasons.
"I feel like my game has took a big leap from the first few years and it's continually going up," Wilson said. "Stats don't make everything, but a lot of people look at stats. I'm here to play great defense and be a great teammate, and the rest of the stuff will follow."
Wilson will have plenty of motivation to prove himself given that the Saints declined his fifth-year option after the trade, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
"It's a one-year trial, and we'll see how it goes," Saints general manager Mickey Loomis told reporters after the trade on Saturday.
Loomis also said he had been speaking with the Raiders about a potential trade for Wilson for "quite some time," and that defensive coordinator Brandon Staley already had ideas as to how to utilize him.
"I think, more than anything, Brandon has a vision for him fitting into our defense," Loomis said.
Wilson recorded 35 tackles (eight for loss) alongside 4.0 sacks, six quarterback hits, two passes defensed, two forced fumbles and a safety in 17 games and three starts last season.
His best game of the season came in Week 18, when Wilson recorded two sacks against the shorthanded Kansas City Chiefs.
Wilson will now look to build on that performance during his first season with the Saints. How Staley ultimately decides to fit him into the Saints defensive scheme will determine whether he sees more playing time than in Las Vegas, where he played 41 percent of the Raiders' defensive snaps during his final season with the team.
