New Ty Simpson Rumors on Rams' Plans to Trade Back During 2026 NFL Draft
The Los Angeles Rams decision to draft quarterback Ty Simpson 13th overall in last week's NFL draft surprised many, but it turns out they were actually hoping to get him later in the draft.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Rams initially hoped to trade back for Simpson rather than taking him at No. 13.
"Now, the Rams were going to try to trade back. That was the plan, hopefully move back to, say Detroit at 17, get some extra picks and take Ty Simpson there," Schefter said (34:30 mark). "When their turn on the clock came, they didn't get any calls. They had no offers."
Schefter added that, if the Rams hadn't selected Simpson in the first round, it was "more likely that he would've gone in the second round."
Simpson was the No. 44 overall player and the No. 2 quarterback on the final big board from B/R's NFL Scouting Department. The former Alabama signal caller was widely projected to be a second-round pick, with some pegging him as a late first-rounder.
Nonetheless, the Rams decided to draft who they hope will be Matthew Stafford's eventual successor at No. 13.
