New WWE Rumors on Why Roster Cuts Happened After WrestleMania 42

Doric SamApr 27, 2026

WWE shocked many fans last week with a slew of roster cuts after WrestleMania 42, leaving them wondering what led to the decision to let some beloved Superstars go.

According to a report from Fightful Select (h/t Steve Carrier of Ringside News), the main reason for the cuts was to make room on the roster for new Superstars.

"WWE sources indicated that the majority of releases were to make way for new talent," the report stated, adding that even the NXT releases "were also made as new Performance Center signings are expected to be announced soon."

WWE released multiple veterans, including the entire Wyatt Sicks stable, Kairi Sane, Aleister Black and Zelina Vega.

The report added that there's a "possibility of SmackDown reducing to two hours in the near future," which would undoubtedly reduce the number of Superstars needed on a weekly basis.

The main-roster Superstars who were released all have 90-day non-compete clauses that will need to be fulfilled before they can work for other wrestling promotions. NXT talents who were released will only have to wait 30 days.

While it's always disappointing when mass releases happen, it's clear that WWE is hoping to usher in a new era with up-and-coming Superstars who can lead the way into the future.
